Coast, Valley or Desert: A Boerboel in the California Climate

California is really several climates. Thanks to the Pacific Ocean, the coast stays mild all year, while inland areas swing much more between seasons. Typical summer highs go from under 70 °F along the northern coast and in the high mountains to over 110 °F in the Mojave Desert.

Rain follows a pattern too: summers are generally dry, and more than half of the year's precipitation falls between December and February. Wildfires are a natural part of the California climate, and in recent decades they have grown larger and more intense.

Boerboels are rustic, hardy dogs that cope well with both heat and cold. What changes from the coast to the desert is how you organize the day:

In an inland summer, plan walks and training for early morning or evening, never in the full heat of the afternoon.
Keep shade and fresh water available, and let your dog rest inside when it is hottest.
Treat your puppy's crate as a calm, safe place from day one. When smoke or bad weather upsets the family routine, a dog that rests quietly in its crate is much easier to manage.
If you have any doubt about your dog's health in the heat, ask your veterinarian.

Our article on Boerboels living indoors covers indoor rest in hot, cold and wet climates.

A Boerboel in a California City or on Open Land

Whether you live in a city apartment or on a few acres, the same rule applies: a Boerboel is a family guardian, raised to live close to its people. It does not do well left alone in a yard for long hours.

In a city, routine replaces space. Plan structured walks every day, short training sessions and calm time on its own bed. Puppies are still growing, so skip forced running, lots of stairs and repetitive jumping. Our guide can a Boerboel live in an apartment goes through it in detail.

On a larger property, a secure fence helps your dog move freely and relax outside. It still needs you: training, walks beyond your own gate and time inside the house with the family.
