Raising a Boerboel in the Texas Heat
Texas has hot summers. In much of the state, typical summer highs start in the low 90s °F, and some summers bring long runs of days at 100 °F or more. The east of the state, closer to the Gulf, is also much wetter than the far west.
The Boerboel comes from South Africa and is a robust, hardy dog that copes well with heat. That does not mean it should spend a Texas afternoon in the sun. A heavy mastiff-type dog still needs you to manage the hottest hours:
- Give your Boerboel shade and fresh water at all times.
- Let it rest indoors during the hottest part of the day.
- Avoid intense exercise in extreme heat. Walk and train in the cooler hours of the day.
- Watch puppies and older dogs more carefully, and speak with your veterinarian if you have any health concern.
Puppies need extra care. Their bones and joints are still growing, so short walks, free exploration and calm play are better than long runs, in any weather. Read more in can Boerboels live indoors.
Space, Yards and Fences for a Boerboel in Texas
If you have land in Texas, that helps: the Boerboel often does best with space, and a securely fenced property is helpful for free movement and relaxed time outside. But a yard does not raise a dog. Owners do.
The Boerboel is a family guardian, not a dog to leave outside and forget. Boerboels do not like spending very long periods completely alone, and a dog isolated in the yard can become bored, noisy or more reactive. The dogs we raise live best as part of the home: a quiet place to rest inside, clear rules in the house, daily walks and short training sessions outside.
If you live in a city like Houston or Dallas with a smaller yard, the same rules apply. Routine matters more than square footage. A calm, well-trained Boerboel can live well in a normal family home.
The First Days at Home in Texas
Travel can affect appetite and digestion, even in a confident puppy. When your Boerboel arrives, keep the first days simple. Do not introduce too many new foods at once. Let your puppy rest, drink, explore calmly and settle into the new routine.
After that, feed for slow, steady growth with a good large breed or giant breed puppy food, not for size. A puppy that grows too fast or carries too much weight can pay the price later. Our feeding guide explains it: the best food for Boerboel puppies. If there are children at home, read are Boerboels good with children before your puppy arrives.
